InvolveMint - Redesign POI Process

Convert volunteer service hours into a tradable currency.

Background

After volunteering, people usually get a certificate to show their contribution. But with InvolveMint's program, those certificates can be turned into points you can actually use! At the heart of InvolveMint is the idea of Proof of Impact—volunteers can log what they’ve done and convert their hours into points.

InvolveMint started in 2018, and I joined the team in 2024 to help make the app even smoother and more enjoyable for volunteers to turn their hard work into points they can benefit from.

Problem

During user research, we discovered a significant mental model gap: users were completely unaware that volunteer hours could be converted into points. After interviewing 10 participants, we found they perceived the app solely as a basic check-in tool for on-site logging. This misunderstanding led to an 80% drop-off rate immediately after the initial onboarding, as users proceeded to their volunteer tasks without further engagement.

Redefine User Flow

After uncovering that a lack of clarity was the primary barrier for users, we overhauled the information architecture and onboarding flow. By introducing interactive guidance and reducing data-entry hurdles, we simplified the process, ensuring users could understand and navigate the app with ease.

Wireframe

We iterated through several wireframe versions based on the user journey and conducted usability testing to validate our assumptions. We discovered that presenting onboarding as a long list led to user fatigue and impatience, so we pivoted to a step-by-step, single-page-per-task flow to improve focus and completion rates.

Key Feature

To fix unclear instructions and prompts in the app, I improved several features of the POI process. I updated the visual design and made the app's design elements consistent to build user trust. I also adjusted the POI interface layout and added more white space to make the content easier to read.

01 Onboarding Process

Before entering the POI stage, users can go through the onboarding steps to understand the upcoming process. This also informs them about what they need to submit in the following steps and helps set their expectations for the final outcome.

02 Join via QR Code or Search

Users don’t need to fill in project details to join a project manually. Instead, they can scan the organizer’s QR code or use the search bar to find the project by entering keywords. This allows users to focus more on their work!

03 Before &After Photo Prompt

By providing users with prompts to take before-and-after photos, they can answer project organizers' questions through the photos. This reduces the cognitive load on users by eliminating the need to remember the amount of output they produced during their work.

Outcome

We successfully increased the completion rate of the proof of impact process from 36% to nearly 70%.
